Prof. Wang Jialing of Tianjin Normal University passed away on 12:30 AMJune, 23. He died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 74.

Professor Wang is one of the first to introduce Optimality Theory intoMainland China. Most of us would also be familiar with his work in thephonology of Northern Mandarin languages like Tianjin and Beijing Mandarin.

More importantly, Prof Wang has cultivated many students and has been askind to junior linguists who may not have the fortune of learning in hisclassroom.

China has lost a great linguist, scholar. The world has lost a greatteacher who has been producing many of the finest linguists in the area ofChinese phonology.
